| First - Calculate the actual size of your pond using one of the formulas
below: Note - All dimensions are in feet. |

| Triangular pond formula | length x width x depth) x .5 x 7.5 | = Gallons Capacity |
| Circular pond formula | 1/2 diameter x 1/2 diameter x 3.14 x 7.5 | = Gallons Capacity |
| Second - Adjust the actual pond volume based upon the following factors: | ||
| Pond Depth | If the average depth is less than 2 1/2 ft | Add 25% |
| Pond Location Sun or Shade? |
If the pond is in full sun | Add 25% |
| Climate | Warmer water encourages algae growth, increases pollutants and reduces oxygen | |
| If located in a hot climate (USDA zones 8-10) | add 35% | |
| If located in a warm climate (USDA zones 6-7) | add 15% | |
| If located in a cool climate (USDA zones 1-5) | No Change | |
| Third - consider the total number of inches of fish in your pond or the total inches of fish that you expect to ultimately have. |
| Make sure that the total inches of fish does not exceed the capacity of the filter |

| Your pond's actual depth is 2 feet | add 25% |
| Your pond is in full sun | add 25% |
| You live in Virginia (USDA zone 6-7) | add 15% |
