Summit Barley Straw Planters work improving water quality in several ways. The natural decomposition of the straw in the water helps to keep water quality pristine. This is accomplished by a natural reaction between the humic acids in the straw from decomposition, sunlight and oxygen. These elements combine to create a condition which keeps water clear. Barley straw promotes healthy populations of invertebrate life that consume harmful contaminates. These tiny creatures are important to the food chain in the pond. All these processes combine to produce a clearer, healthier and long lasting pond environment.

Place bale on the surface of the pond, preferably near waterfall or filter outlet. Do not allow bales to sink to the bottom of the pond. If bale sinks, remove from pond for 24 hours to dry then put it back. Allow one month for the bale to become effective. Replace each bale after 6 months of use. For continuous treatment, after 5 months, place a new bale next to the old one. Then remove the oldest one at the 6 month mark. For best results keep barley straw bale floating on the pond year round.

Microbe-Lift Barley Straw Pellets works in much the same way as barley straw...only faster! Whereas barley straw works by releasing certain natural chemicals as it biodegrades, so do the pellets in Barley Straw Pellets, only the breakdown compounds are released faster: dispersing equally throughout the water; reacting photo chemically with sunlight; and activating humic acids to produce hydrogen peroxide - an oxidizing agent that also helps to keep the water clear - naturally and at a low level of release. The humic acid will also chelate metals such as copper or arsenic.
